Muslim Leadership Council’s initiative has served over 2300 meals so far in the last 3 weeks
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 17, 2020
The Muslim Leadership Council of San Diego (http://www.mlcsd.org), an umbrella organization representing over 25 Muslim organizations based in San Diego today announced it will continue serving warm meals to San Diegans impacted by the COVID-19 crisis at least until the shelter in place order is lifted, due to an overwhelmingly positive response to the program. Initially envisaged as just a week-long program, the initiative has grown as the need has been so apparent, with over 2300 meals served so far. About 95% of the Meals served in our program were Free Delivery at the doorstep of recipients across San Diego County
Initiated within a few days of Governor Newsom’s shelter in place order, the program has served senior citizens, senior facilities, unsheltered individuals and groups, healthcare workers, first responders, students and anyone in need in San Diego County.
“The primary goal of the initiative is to be a lifeline for seniors and other who cannot take the risk of venturing out, and healthcare workers who are busy serving on the frontlines of the battle against the pandemic,” said Mr. Ghouse Mohammed, Chairman of the Muslim Leadership Council of San Diego. “We are truly grateful to the enthusiastic volunteers from multiple organizations in San Diego who have stepped up to deliver these meals every day, as an expression of their civic responsibility,” added Mr. Mohammed.
Among the organizations in the forefront of supporting MLC’s Warm Meals initiative has been “Hugs and Bags” (www.hugsandbags.com), an organization dedicated to serving San Diego’s homeless and underprivileged. Hugs and Bags has been instrumental in getting many warm to senior citizens and continues to be a key partner for MLC in executing this program.
“As San Diegans it is critical for us to come together as a community and ensure we protect the most vulnerable amongst us, as well as those who are risking their lives in order to save those afflicted with COVID-19,” said Mr. Mohammed.
While the funding so far has come from the San Diego Muslim community, MLC is now looking for additional funding in order to continue the effort.
