The Muslim Leadership Council of San Diego (www.mlcsd.org) , an umbrella organization representing over 25 Muslim organizations based in San Diego, marked the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Friday, with the announcement that it is committed to continue serving free warm meals to San Diegans who face food insecurity during this global pandemic.
Funded by MLC and its constituent organizations as well as the broader Muslim community, our Warm Meals program has so far served over 3,500 meals to seniors, healthcare workers, low-income families, unsheltered individuals, first responders and organizations in need of food for their members in San Diego County. We welcome Governor Newsom’s initiative called Restaurants Deliver, aimed at providing meals to older Californians free of cost. We firmly believe the need goes beyond that of senior citizens and will continue this program for the duration of the holy month of Ramadan.
“Ramadan is a month of increased charity and good deeds, and its really heartening to know that Muslim community volunteers, who would themselves be fasting from dawn to dusk, are stepping up to help feed others,” said Imam Taha Hassane of the Islamic Center of San Diego, a member of MLC. “I urge the Muslim community as well as our interfaith partners to support this initiative to continue serving those in need in these difficult times,” added Imam Hassane.
“The program would not be sustainable without the heroic effort of our volunteers who have put in over 2,000 volunteer hours over the course of the last four weeks,” said Mr. Ghouse Mohammed, Chairman of the Muslim Leadership Council. “We are also grateful for partner and member organizations, such as “Hugs and Bags”, “Pillars of the Community”, and “Hotel Vouchers for All”, who continue to utilize this critical and generous service to meet the demands of all who are in need of a warm meal. This, in addition to the list we have from daily signups and requests, has shown us the growing food insecurity in our region during this pandemic.” added Mr. Mohammed.
The response to the initiative has been overwhelming, highlighting the immense need for such a service for local San Diegans, including those who are risking their lives in order to save others afflicted by COVID-19.
